A former lawyer from Washington DC who left over a scandal when caught with an underage boy he was supplying with drugs and making him pay in sexual ways to feed his habit, although later the boy confessed the relationship was mutual and he was really of legal age. He was disbarred and his family turned their back on him, that is until they need a favour. He had this reputation growing up that he would do anything to get what he wanted and was always successful in seeing results.

Although he was run out of town, this African-American man had many of his former male lovers come look him up no matter which town he came to hide. Then one day there was a particularly jealous former lover, Don, that began stalking him and tried to kill him. Although that man was diagnosed as clinically manic-depressive with an compulsion disorder and dangerous to himself and to those of his obsession and put up for his own safety, he had been known from time to time escaping and looking for William in order to force him to commit or kill him. The last escape landed him in a hospital while he was traveling in Florida. Don escaped and tracked him to a motel where he was intimate with another man he just met named Leon who was in town for a gun show especially for pawn shop owners. Don broke into their room and beat them both with a lead pipe. He split Leon's skull and left him in a coma and attempted to kidnap William, but the police caught on and stopped him before he could leave the area.

It seemed as if Leon might die as he was in a coma for a few days, but Don stayed by his side feeling guilty for what happened. Leon came out of the coma to find him there and asked him to take him back home. William didn't really have anywhere else to go. His career was over and Don made sure he lost his last job and thrown out of his apartment. He agreed to take him home and take care of him until he got better. He did not know that Leon was from a wealthy family or of his connections and this impressed Leon enough to be his partner, so long as William wanted him. William wanted to be in a relationship, but was afraid to commit to anyone with Don always trying to kill him and anyone he was with. Leon promised if he stayed and moved in with him, he would be safe.

They lived together for many years after they met and ran the pawn shop together. They made pretty good money without having to rely on the Gannette fortune which was good because they were considered among the black sheep of the family. Even brothers Donnie and Parker Gannette saw Leon as the lowest of the low because he was gay, but largely left them alone because they were considered the most dangerous people in Kensington Falls. They had ties to international dangerous gangs involved in drugs, prostitution, illegal goods, and murder for hire. William had many talents for dealing with these bad elements, but his one weakness was Don. He still had feelings for him, but could not love a man who was insane.
