A single man who is professor of religious studies and history at Kensington University. He was named after one of his ancestors caught up in a scandal and became a better man. The family name was given as a reminder that we all make mistakes, but the trick is to overcome them and learn a lesson.
William is considered a pious man, but very stubborn in his ways. He had a few female friends in the past, but none of them lived up to his very high standards for a Christian wife so he decided it was best to remain unmarried and serve the community without having his attentions divided.
His main source of grief are his two neighbors, Ahmed and Abraham. Before they showed up in town, he was the head of the religious studies department and was looking to become head of the history department in his transfer request. The town decided it needed to embrace diversity so the young people could compete in the modern world and sent out for the best teachers of history with different points of view. Ahmed was made head of the history department while Abraham was made head of the religious studies department, both men had better qualifications and more experience than William.
William's demotion was due more to the fact that he wanted to do things his own way while ignoring the board's requirements like staging a protest with his students to storm the science department to demand they teach Intelligent Design along with evolution as well as the requirement he placed on the students to attend his particular church in order to pass. He is very well known for calling up the radio talk shows and expressing his opinions on television and the newspapers which did not reflect very well with the school.
Although he has his flaws, he would do anything to help anyone in need, even if he disliked them, he feels it is his duty to give what he has to those who need it. He serves as a volunteer in the hospital on his days off and runs a free camp for children during the summer. He is very active on the Municipal Citizens Committee. And he still finds time to attend church three times a week.
